In astonishingly general terms, there are 3 general tactics employed. You must be able to switch techniques instantly as the action of the match unfolds.

The Blockade

This comprises of assembling a 6-thick wall of checkers, or at a minimum as thick as you can manage, to barricade in your competitor’s checkers that are located on your 1-point. This is considered to be the most suitable course of action at the begining of the game. You can create the wall anyplace within your eleven-point and your two-point and then shuffle it into your home board as the match continues.

The Blitz

This is composed of locking your home board as fast as as you can while keeping your opposer on the bar. i.e., if your challenger rolls an early 2 and moves one checker from your 1-point to your 3-point and you then roll a five-five, you can play 6/1 6/1 eight/three 8/3. Your opposer is then in big-time difficulty because they have two checkers on the bar and you have locked half your inner board!

The Backgame

This course of action is where you have 2 or higher anchors in your opponent’s home board. (An anchor is a point consisting of at a minimum 2 of your checkers.) It must be employed when you are decidedly behind as it greatly improves your circumstances. The best places for anchors are towards your opponent’s lower points and also on adjacent points or with one point separating them. Timing is crucial for an effectual backgame: at the end of the day, there is no reason having two nice anchors and a solid wall in your own home board if you are then required to break down this straight away, while your opponent is getting their pieces home, owing to the fact that you don’t have any other additional checkers to move! In this case, it is more tolerable to have checkers on the bar so that you are able to maintain your position up until your competitor gives you an opportunity to hit, so it may be an excellent idea to try and get your challenger to hit them in this situation!
