In astonishingly general terms, there are three general game plans used. You must be able to switch strategies quickly as the action of the match unfolds.

The Blockade

This is comprised of creating a 6-deep wall of checkers, or at a minimum as thick as you are able to achieve, to lock in your competitor’s pieces that are located on your 1-point. This is judged to be the most adequate procedure at the start of the game. You can create the wall anyplace inbetween your 11-point and your 2-point and then shift it into your home board as the game advances.

The Blitz

This consists of closing your home board as fast as possible while keeping your challenger on the bar. i.e., if your challenger rolls an early 2 and shifts one piece from your one-point to your three-point and you then toss a 5-5, you are able to play six/one six/one eight/three eight/three. Your opponent is now in big-time calamity taking into account that they have two checkers on the bar and you have locked half your home board!

The Backgame

This strategy is where you have two or more pieces in your opponent’s inner board. (An anchor is a position consisting of at a minimum 2 of your pieces.) It must be employed when you are significantly behind as this plan much improves your opportunities. The best areas for anchor spots are towards your competitor’s lower points and either on adjacent points or with a single point separating them. Timing is integral for a competent backgame: besides, there’s no point having two nice anchors and a complete wall in your own home board if you are then forced to break up this right away, while your opponent is getting their pieces home, because you do not have other additional pieces to move! In this case, it is more favorable to have pieces on the bar so that you might preserve your position up until your opponent gives you an opportunity to hit, so it can be a great idea to attempt and get your opposer to hit them in this situation!
