In extraordinarily general terms, there are 3 general tactics employed. You must be able to hop between tactics almost instantly as the course of the game unfolds.
The Blockade
This comprises of creating a 6-deep wall of checkers, or at a minimum as thick as you might manage, to block in your competitor’s checkers that are located on your 1-point. This is deemed to be the most suitable procedure at the start of the game. You can create the wall anyplace within your 11-point and your 2-point and then shuffle it into your home board as the game continues.
The Blitz
This is comprised of locking your home board as quick as possible while keeping your challenger on the bar. i.e., if your challenger tosses an early 2 and moves one checker from your 1-point to your three-point and you then toss a 5-5, you will be able to play 6/1 6/1 8/3 eight/three. Your opposer is then in serious dire straits due to the fact that they have two checkers on the bar and you have locked half your inner board!
The Backgame
This strategy is where you have two or higher pieces in your competitor’s inner board. (An anchor is a point consisting of at a minimum two of your checkers.) It needs to be used when you are decidedly behind as it much improves your opportunities. The better areas for anchor spots are near your opponent’s lower points and also on adjacent points or with one point in between. Timing is essential for a powerful backgame: besides, there is no reason having two nice anchors and a solid wall in your own home board if you are then required to break apart this right away, while your opponent is shifting their pieces home, considering that you don’t have any other extra checkers to shift! In this situation, it is better to have pieces on the bar so that you can preserve your position until your opposer gives you a chance to hit, so it may be a good idea to try and get your competitor to get them in this situation!
