In extraordinarily general terms, there are 3 basic tactics used. You want to be agile enough to hop between game plans quickly as the action of the game unfolds.

The Blockade

This is comprised of creating a 6-thick wall of pieces, or at a minimum as deep as you might manage, to block in the competitor’s pieces that are on your 1-point. This is considered to be the most suitable strategy at the start of the match. You can create the wall anywhere inbetween your 11-point and your two-point and then move it into your home board as the game advances.

The Blitz

This is comprised of locking your home board as quick as possible while keeping your opposer on the bar. For example, if your opposer rolls an early two and shifts one piece from your one-point to your three-point and you then roll a 5-5, you will be able to play 6/1 6/1 8/3 8/3. Your opposer is then in big-time difficulty seeing that they have two checkers on the bar and you have closed half your inner board!

The Backgame

This strategy is where you have 2 or higher pieces in your opponent’s inner board. (An anchor spot is a point filled by at a minimum 2 of your pieces.) It should be used when you are significantly behind as this strategy much improves your opportunities. The better areas for anchors are towards your opponent’s smaller points and also on adjacent points or with one point separating them. Timing is critical for an effective backgame: at the end of the day, there is no reason having two nice anchors and a complete wall in your own home board if you are then forced to break apart this right away, while your challenger is shifting their checkers home, seeing that you do not have other additional pieces to shift! In this case, it is more favorable to have pieces on the bar so that you can maintain your position until your challenger provides you a chance to hit, so it will be an excellent idea to attempt and get your challenger to get them in this situation!
