In extraordinarily general terms, there are three basic plans used. You need to be agile enough to switch strategies quickly as the action of the game unfolds.
The Blockade
This is composed of creating a 6-deep wall of checkers, or at least as deep as you are able to manage, to barricade in the competitor’s pieces that are located on your 1-point. This is deemed to be the most acceptable procedure at the start of the match. You can build the wall anywhere between your 11-point and your 2-point and then shift it into your home board as the match advances.
The Blitz
This involves locking your home board as fast as possible while keeping your opposer on the bar. e.g., if your challenger tosses an early 2 and moves one piece from your 1-point to your three-point and you then toss a five-five, you will be able to play six/one six/one 8/3 8/3. Your opposer is now in big-time calamity considering that they have two pieces on the bar and you have locked half your inside board!
The Backgame
This tactic is where you have 2 or higher pieces in your competitor’s home board. (An anchor spot is a point filled by at least two of your pieces.) It should be played when you are significantly behind as this plan greatly improves your chances. The better locations for anchors are towards your competitor’s lower points and also on abutting points or with one point in between. Timing is integral for a powerful backgame: after all, there is no reason having two nice anchor spots and a complete wall in your own home board if you are then forced to break apart this right away, while your challenger is shifting their pieces home, taking into account that you do not have any other extra pieces to shift! In this situation, it’s more favorable to have pieces on the bar so that you can preserve your position up till your opponent provides you a chance to hit, so it may be a great idea to attempt and get your opponent to hit them in this situation!
