In astonishingly general terms, there are 3 basic game plans employed. You need to be able to hop between techniques quickly as the course of the match unfolds.

The Blockade

This is comprised of assembling a 6-deep wall of checkers, or at least as deep as you might achieve, to lock in your opponent’s checkers that are on your 1-point. This is deemed to be the most suitable procedure at the begining of the game. You can assemble the wall anywhere within your eleven-point and your 2-point and then shuffle it into your home board as the match continues.

The Blitz

This involves closing your home board as quickly as as you can while keeping your opponent on the bar. For example, if your opponent tosses an early 2 and shifts one checker from your one-point to your three-point and you then roll a 5-5, you can play 6/1 6/1 8/3 8/3. Your challenger is now in big-time dire straits seeing that they have two checkers on the bar and you have locked half your inner board!

The Backgame

This tactic is where you have two or more anchors in your competitor’s home board. (An anchor spot is a position consisting of at a minimum two of your pieces.) It must be employed when you are significantly behind as this action greatly improves your chances. The strongest places for anchors are towards your opponent’s smaller points and either on adjacent points or with one point separating them. Timing is crucial for an effectual backgame: after all, there’s no reason having 2 nice anchor spots and a complete wall in your own inner board if you are then forced to break up this right away, while your opposer is getting their pieces home, taking into account that you don’t have any other extra checkers to move! In this situation, it’s better to have pieces on the bar so that you might preserve your position until your challenger provides you a chance to hit, so it will be an excellent idea to attempt and get your challenger to hit them in this situation!
