In astonishingly simple terms, there are 3 main plans used. You must be agile enough to hop between tactics quickly as the course of the match unfolds.

The Blockade

This is comprised of assembling a 6-thick wall of checkers, or at a minimum as deep as you can manage, to lock in the opponent’s pieces that are located on your 1-point. This is considered to be the most adequate tactic at the begining of the match. You can build the wall anywhere inbetween your 11-point and your 2-point and then shift it into your home board as the game continues.

The Blitz

This consists of closing your home board as quick as as you can while keeping your challenger on the bar. i.e., if your competitor rolls an early two and moves one checker from your 1-point to your 3-point and you then roll a 5-5, you can play 6/1 6/1 eight/three eight/three. Your competitor is now in serious dire straits due to the fact that they have two pieces on the bar and you have locked half your inner board!

The Backgame

This tactic is where you have 2 or more checkers in your opponent’s inner board. (An anchor is a point occupied by at a minimum 2 of your checkers.) It would be played when you are decidedly behind as this action greatly improves your circumstances. The better areas for anchors are towards your competitor’s lower points and either on adjoining points or with one point separating them. Timing is integral for a competent backgame: at the end of the day, there is no reason having two nice anchor spots and a complete wall in your own inner board if you are then forced to dismantle this right away, while your opponent is getting their pieces home, seeing that you do not have any other extra checkers to move! In this case, it’s more favorable to have pieces on the bar so that you are able to maintain your position until your opponent gives you a chance to hit, so it will be a great idea to try and get your challenger to get them in this case!
