In very simple terms, there are 3 fundamental game plans employed. You must be agile enough to switch techniques quickly as the action of the match unfolds.

The Blockade

This comprises of creating a 6-deep wall of checkers, or at a minimum as deep as you might manage, to block in your opponent’s checkers that are on your 1-point. This is judged to be the most adequate procedure at the start of the match. You can create the wall anywhere inbetween your eleven-point and your two-point and then shuffle it into your home board as the game continues.

The Blitz

This involves closing your home board as fast as possible while keeping your opposer on the bar. e.g., if your opponent tosses an early 2 and shifts one checker from your 1-point to your 3-point and you then toss a five-five, you will be able to play 6/1 6/1 eight/three eight/three. Your opposer is now in serious dire straits due to the fact that they have 2 pieces on the bar and you have closed half your home board!

The Backgame

This tactic is where you have two or higher checkers in your competitor’s inner board. (An anchor is a position filled by at a minimum two of your checkers.) It needs to be played when you are extremely behind as it much improves your opportunities. The best areas for anchor spots are towards your competitor’s smaller points and also on adjoining points or with a single point separating them. Timing is integral for an effectual backgame: besides, there is no point having 2 nice anchor spots and a solid wall in your own inner board if you are then required to break down this straight away, while your opponent is moving their checkers home, considering that you do not have other spare checkers to move! In this case, it’s more tolerable to have pieces on the bar so that you can preserve your position up till your competitor provides you an opportunity to hit, so it can be an excellent idea to try and get your opposer to get them in this situation!
