In astonishingly simple terms, there are 3 basic game plans used. You want to be able to switch game plans instantly as the action of the game unfolds.
The Blockade
This consists of assembling a 6-thick wall of checkers, or at a minimum as thick as you can manage, to block in your opponent’s pieces that are located on your 1-point. This is deemed to be the most adequate strategy at the start of the match. You can build the wall anyplace between your eleven-point and your two-point and then shift it into your home board as the game continues.
The Blitz
This involves locking your home board as quickly as possible while keeping your opposer on the bar. For example, if your opponent tosses an early 2 and shifts one checker from your one-point to your three-point and you then roll a 5-5, you will be able to play six/one six/one 8/3 eight/three. Your opponent is then in big-time calamity due to the fact that they have 2 checkers on the bar and you have locked half your home board!
The Backgame
This plan is where you have two or higher pieces in your competitor’s home board. (An anchor spot is a point filled by at a minimum 2 of your checkers.) It must be played when you are decidedly behind as this strategy greatly improves your chances. The best places for anchors are towards your opponent’s lower points and either on adjacent points or with a single point in between. Timing is critical for a powerful backgame: at the end of the day, there’s no point having 2 nice anchors and a solid wall in your own inner board if you are then required to break up this straight away, while your competitor is shifting their pieces home, taking into account that you don’t have any other additional pieces to shift! In this situation, it’s more favorable to have pieces on the bar so that you are able to preserve your position up until your competitor gives you a chance to hit, so it may be a great idea to attempt and get your challenger to get them in this situation!
