In exceptionally general terms, there are 3 general plans employed. You must be able to hop between game plans quickly as the course of the match unfolds.

The Blockade

This consists of building a 6-thick wall of pieces, or at a minimum as thick as you can achieve, to lock in your competitor’s pieces that are on your 1-point. This is deemed to be the most suitable procedure at the start of the game. You can build the wall anyplace inbetween your eleven-point and your two-point and then move it into your home board as the game advances.

The Blitz

This consists of closing your home board as fast as possible while keeping your competitor on the bar. e.g., if your opposer tosses an early 2 and moves one checker from your one-point to your three-point and you then toss a five-five, you can play six/one six/one 8/3 eight/three. Your competitor is now in big-time dire straits considering that they have two pieces on the bar and you have closed half your inside board!

The Backgame

This plan is where you have two or more checkers in your competitor’s inner board. (An anchor is a point occupied by at least 2 of your pieces.) It needs to be used when you are extremely behind as this plan greatly improves your chances. The strongest places for anchor spots are towards your opponent’s lower points and also on adjoining points or with a single point separating them. Timing is integral for an effective backgame: at the end of the day, there’s no reason having two nice anchor spots and a complete wall in your own home board if you are then forced to dismantle this right away, while your opposer is getting their pieces home, because you don’t have any other additional pieces to move! In this situation, it is more tolerable to have pieces on the bar so that you might preserve your position up till your opposer provides you a chance to hit, so it may be a great idea to attempt and get your opposer to hit them in this case!
