In astonishingly simple terms, there are 3 chief game plans used. You need to be agile enough to hop between strategies quickly as the action of the match unfolds.

The Blockade

This is comprised of building a 6-deep wall of pieces, or at least as thick as you are able to achieve, to barricade in your opponent’s pieces that are on your 1-point. This is considered to be the most adequate procedure at the begining of the match. You can assemble the wall anyplace between your 11-point and your two-point and then shift it into your home board as the game progresses.

The Blitz

This is comprised of locking your home board as quick as as you can while keeping your challenger on the bar. e.g., if your challenger rolls an early two and moves one checker from your 1-point to your 3-point and you then toss a 5-5, you are able to play 6/1 six/one eight/three 8/3. Your challenger is then in big-time dire straits since they have two checkers on the bar and you have locked half your home board!

The Backgame

This plan is where you have two or more anchors in your competitor’s home board. (An anchor is a point consisting of at least 2 of your pieces.) It must be played when you are extremely behind as this action greatly improves your circumstances. The best areas for anchors are towards your opponent’s smaller points and either on abutting points or with a single point separating them. Timing is important for a competent backgame: at the end of the day, there is no point having 2 nice anchor spots and a complete wall in your own inner board if you are then forced to break down this straight away, while your opposer is moving their checkers home, because you don’t have other spare pieces to move! In this situation, it is more tolerable to have checkers on the bar so that you can maintain your position up until your opponent gives you a chance to hit, so it will be a wonderful idea to attempt and get your opponent to get them in this situation!
