In astonishingly simple terms, there are 3 main plans used. You want to be able to switch strategies almost instantly as the action of the match unfolds.

The Blockade

This comprises of creating a 6-deep wall of pieces, or at least as thick as you can achieve, to lock in your opponent’s pieces that are on your 1-point. This is deemed to be the most adequate tactic at the start of the game. You can build the wall anywhere inbetween your eleven-point and your 2-point and then move it into your home board as the game continues.

The Blitz

This is composed of closing your home board as fast as as you can while keeping your opponent on the bar. For example, if your competitor rolls an early 2 and moves one piece from your 1-point to your 3-point and you then roll a 5-5, you are able to play six/one 6/1 eight/three eight/three. Your opponent is then in big-time difficulty considering that they have 2 pieces on the bar and you have closed half your inner board!

The Backgame

This tactic is where you have two or more anchors in your opponent’s home board. (An anchor is a point consisting of at a minimum 2 of your checkers.) It must be employed when you are extremely behind as this action much improves your circumstances. The best areas for anchor spots are close to your competitor’s smaller points and either on abutting points or with a single point separating them. Timing is critical for a competent backgame: at the end of the day, there’s no reason having two nice anchor spots and a solid wall in your own inner board if you are then required to break up this right away, while your challenger is moving their checkers home, taking into account that you do not have any other additional checkers to shift! In this case, it is better to have pieces on the bar so that you are able to maintain your position until your competitor gives you a chance to hit, so it will be a good idea to attempt and get your competitor to hit them in this case!
