In astonishingly general terms, there are 3 basic plans used. You need to be agile enough to switch techniques quickly as the course of the game unfolds.
The Blockade
This involves creating a 6-thick wall of checkers, or at least as thick as you are able to manage, to barricade in the competitor’s pieces that are located on your 1-point. This is judged to be the most suitable course of action at the start of the game. You can assemble the wall anywhere between your eleven-point and your two-point and then shuffle it into your home board as the game continues.
The Blitz
This is comprised of locking your home board as quickly as possible while keeping your opponent on the bar. i.e., if your competitor rolls an early two and shifts one checker from your one-point to your three-point and you then roll a five-five, you will be able to play six/one 6/1 eight/three eight/three. Your opponent is now in big-time calamity since they have 2 checkers on the bar and you have locked half your home board!
The Backgame
This strategy is where you have 2 or more pieces in your competitor’s inner board. (An anchor is a position occupied by at least two of your pieces.) It needs to be used when you are extremely behind as it much improves your chances. The best locations for anchor spots are near your opponent’s lower points and either on adjacent points or with a single point in between. Timing is important for an effective backgame: after all, there is no reason having two nice anchors and a complete wall in your own inner board if you are then required to dismantle this right away, while your challenger is getting their checkers home, owing to the fact that you do not have any other spare pieces to shift! In this situation, it’s more favorable to have pieces on the bar so that you are able to preserve your position until your challenger provides you an opportunity to hit, so it may be a great idea to try and get your opposer to get them in this case!
