In astonishingly general terms, there are 3 fundamental plans used. You must be able to switch strategies almost instantly as the action of the match unfolds.

The Blockade

This is composed of assembling a 6-deep wall of checkers, or at least as deep as you might manage, to block in the opponent’s checkers that are on your 1-point. This is considered to be the most suitable procedure at the begining of the match. You can build the wall anywhere between your eleven-point and your two-point and then shuffle it into your home board as the game continues.

The Blitz

This involves closing your home board as quick as as you can while keeping your opposer on the bar. e.g., if your opponent tosses an early two and shifts one piece from your 1-point to your 3-point and you then roll a five-five, you will be able to play 6/1 6/1 eight/three 8/3. Your challenger is now in big-time trouble due to the fact that they have two checkers on the bar and you have closed half your inside board!

The Backgame

This strategy is where you have 2 or more checkers in your competitor’s inner board. (An anchor spot is a position consisting of at least two of your checkers.) It should be employed when you are significantly behind as this strategy greatly improves your circumstances. The better locations for anchor spots are towards your opponent’s lower points and also on adjacent points or with one point in between. Timing is integral for an effective backgame: at the end of the day, there is no reason having 2 nice anchor spots and a solid wall in your own home board if you are then required to break down this right away, while your competitor is shifting their checkers home, seeing that you don’t have any other extra pieces to move! In this case, it is more tolerable to have checkers on the bar so that you can maintain your position until your challenger gives you a chance to hit, so it can be a wonderful idea to try and get your opposer to get them in this situation!
