In very general terms, there are 3 fundamental strategies used. You must be agile enough to hop between strategies quickly as the action of the game unfolds.

The Blockade

This is composed of building a 6-thick wall of pieces, or at least as deep as you are able to manage, to block in your opponent’s checkers that are on your 1-point. This is judged to be the most acceptable procedure at the start of the game. You can create the wall anywhere between your 11-point and your two-point and then shift it into your home board as the game continues.

The Blitz

This is comprised of closing your home board as quick as possible while keeping your opponent on the bar. e.g., if your opposer tosses an early 2 and shifts one checker from your 1-point to your three-point and you then roll a 5-5, you can play 6/1 6/1 eight/three eight/three. Your competitor is now in serious difficulty considering that they have 2 pieces on the bar and you have locked half your home board!

The Backgame

This course of action is where you have two or more checkers in your opponent’s home board. (An anchor is a point consisting of at a minimum 2 of your pieces.) It should be employed when you are decidedly behind as this action much improves your opportunities. The best areas for anchor spots are towards your opponent’s lower points and also on adjoining points or with one point separating them. Timing is important for an effectual backgame: besides, there is no point having 2 nice anchors and a solid wall in your own inner board if you are then required to break up this right away, while your opposer is shifting their pieces home, because you don’t have any other extra pieces to move! In this situation, it’s more favorable to have pieces on the bar so that you might maintain your position until your competitor provides you a chance to hit, so it can be a great idea to try and get your opponent to get them in this situation!
