In exceptionally general terms, there are 3 chief tactics used. You must be able to hop between techniques almost instantly as the action of the match unfolds.

The Blockade

This consists of building a 6-deep wall of checkers, or at a minimum as deep as you can manage, to block in the competitor’s checkers that are located on your 1-point. This is considered to be the most suitable strategy at the start of the match. You can create the wall anywhere between your eleven-point and your two-point and then shift it into your home board as the game continues.

The Blitz

This is composed of closing your home board as quick as possible while keeping your opponent on the bar. e.g., if your opposer tosses an early two and shifts one piece from your one-point to your three-point and you then roll a five-five, you are able to play six/one six/one eight/three eight/three. Your opposer is then in serious trouble seeing that they have two checkers on the bar and you have locked half your inside board!

The Backgame

This plan is where you have 2 or more checkers in your opponent’s home board. (An anchor spot is a point filled by at a minimum 2 of your checkers.) It would be used when you are extremely behind as it much improves your circumstances. The best locations for anchor spots are near your competitor’s lower points and either on abutting points or with one point separating them. Timing is important for an effectual backgame: besides, there’s no point having two nice anchors and a solid wall in your own home board if you are then required to break up this right away, while your opposer is shifting their checkers home, taking into account that you do not have any other extra pieces to shift! In this situation, it is more tolerable to have checkers on the bar so that you might preserve your position up until your opposer gives you a chance to hit, so it can be a good idea to attempt and get your opponent to get them in this case!
