In very simple terms, there are three chief techniques employed. You need to be able to hop between strategies almost instantly as the course of the game unfolds.

The Blockade

This is comprised of building a 6-deep wall of pieces, or at a minimum as thick as you can achieve, to barricade in the opponent’s pieces that are on your 1-point. This is considered to be the most acceptable strategy at the start of the match. You can create the wall anywhere within your 11-point and your two-point and then move it into your home board as the game progresses.

The Blitz

This is composed of locking your home board as quickly as possible while keeping your competitor on the bar. For example, if your competitor tosses an early 2 and shifts one piece from your 1-point to your three-point and you then roll a 5-5, you will be able to play 6/1 six/one eight/three eight/three. Your challenger is now in serious trouble because they have 2 pieces on the bar and you have closed half your home board!

The Backgame

This plan is where you have two or higher checkers in your competitor’s inner board. (An anchor spot is a point consisting of at least two of your pieces.) It needs to be employed when you are extremely behind as this action greatly improves your circumstances. The better areas for anchor spots are near your opponent’s smaller points and either on abutting points or with a single point separating them. Timing is important for an effective backgame: at the end of the day, there is no reason having 2 nice anchor spots and a solid wall in your own home board if you are then forced to break down this right away, while your challenger is getting their pieces home, seeing that you do not have any other additional checkers to move! In this case, it’s better to have checkers on the bar so that you can preserve your position up till your opposer gives you an opportunity to hit, so it may be a great idea to try and get your challenger to get them in this case!
