In extraordinarily general terms, there are three basic game plans used. You must be able to switch game plans quickly as the course of the match unfolds.

The Blockade

This involves assembling a 6-thick wall of checkers, or at least as deep as you are able to manage, to barricade in the competitor’s pieces that are located on your 1-point. This is considered to be the most suitable strategy at the start of the game. You can build the wall anyplace between your 11-point and your two-point and then move it into your home board as the game progresses.

The Blitz

This is composed of locking your home board as fast as possible while keeping your opposer on the bar. e.g., if your opponent rolls an early two and moves one checker from your 1-point to your 3-point and you then roll a 5-5, you are able to play six/one 6/1 8/3 8/3. Your opposer is now in big-time trouble since they have 2 pieces on the bar and you have closed half your home board!

The Backgame

This plan is where you have 2 or more pieces in your competitor’s inner board. (An anchor is a point consisting of at least two of your pieces.) It must be employed when you are decidedly behind as it greatly improves your opportunities. The best areas for anchors are near your opponent’s smaller points and also on adjacent points or with one point separating them. Timing is important for an effectual backgame: besides, there’s no reason having 2 nice anchor spots and a complete wall in your own home board if you are then required to break up this straight away, while your opposer is getting their pieces home, considering that you don’t have any other additional pieces to shift! In this situation, it’s more favorable to have checkers on the bar so that you can maintain your position up till your opposer provides you an opportunity to hit, so it may be a great idea to try and get your opposer to get them in this situation!
