In very general terms, there are 3 chief techniques used. You must be agile enough to switch strategies instantly as the course of the game unfolds.

The Blockade

This is composed of building a 6-deep wall of pieces, or at a minimum as deep as you can achieve, to lock in the competitor’s checkers that are on your 1-point. This is judged to be the most acceptable tactic at the begining of the match. You can build the wall anywhere inbetween your eleven-point and your 2-point and then shuffle it into your home board as the match progresses.

The Blitz

This involves closing your home board as quick as as you can while keeping your opponent on the bar. i.e., if your opponent tosses an early 2 and moves one piece from your 1-point to your 3-point and you then toss a 5-5, you are able to play 6/1 six/one eight/three eight/three. Your challenger is now in serious dire straits considering that they have 2 checkers on the bar and you have closed half your home board!

The Backgame

This tactic is where you have two or more pieces in your opponent’s inner board. (An anchor is a point consisting of at least 2 of your pieces.) It needs to be used when you are significantly behind as this plan greatly improves your circumstances. The better areas for anchor spots are near your opponent’s smaller points and also on adjoining points or with one point in between. Timing is important for an effectual backgame: at the end of the day, there’s no point having two nice anchor spots and a solid wall in your own home board if you are then required to break down this right away, while your competitor is moving their checkers home, seeing that you do not have any other additional checkers to shift! In this case, it’s more favorable to have checkers on the bar so that you can maintain your position up till your challenger provides you a chance to hit, so it can be a wonderful idea to attempt and get your challenger to hit them in this case!
