In extraordinarily simple terms, there are 3 chief plans used. You must be able to switch tactics quickly as the course of the game unfolds.

The Blockade

This involves building a 6-thick wall of pieces, or at a minimum as thick as you can achieve, to barricade in your competitor’s checkers that are on your 1-point. This is considered to be the most adequate course of action at the start of the game. You can assemble the wall anywhere between your eleven-point and your two-point and then shuffle it into your home board as the game advances.

The Blitz

This involves closing your home board as quick as as you can while keeping your opponent on the bar. For example, if your competitor rolls an early 2 and shifts one checker from your one-point to your 3-point and you then toss a 5-5, you can play 6/1 6/1 8/3 eight/three. Your challenger is then in big-time trouble due to the fact that they have 2 pieces on the bar and you have closed half your inside board!

The Backgame

This tactic is where you have 2 or more checkers in your competitor’s home board. (An anchor spot is a position occupied by at least 2 of your checkers.) It needs to be employed when you are significantly behind as it much improves your opportunities. The strongest areas for anchors are near your opponent’s lower points and also on abutting points or with one point separating them. Timing is critical for an effectual backgame: at the end of the day, there is no reason having 2 nice anchor spots and a solid wall in your own home board if you are then required to break up this right away, while your challenger is shifting their pieces home, seeing that you don’t have any other additional pieces to shift! In this case, it is more tolerable to have pieces on the bar so that you might maintain your position up till your opposer provides you an opportunity to hit, so it will be a good idea to try and get your challenger to hit them in this case!
