In astonishingly general terms, there are three general strategies employed. You need to be agile enough to hop between techniques almost instantly as the action of the game unfolds.

The Blockade

This involves assembling a 6-thick wall of pieces, or at a minimum as deep as you might achieve, to lock in your opponent’s pieces that are on your 1-point. This is considered to be the most suitable strategy at the start of the game. You can build the wall anywhere between your eleven-point and your two-point and then shift it into your home board as the game continues.

The Blitz

This consists of locking your home board as quickly as as you can while keeping your challenger on the bar. i.e., if your challenger tosses an early 2 and moves one piece from your 1-point to your three-point and you then roll a five-five, you are able to play 6/1 six/one 8/3 8/3. Your competitor is now in big-time calamity because they have two pieces on the bar and you have closed half your home board!

The Backgame

This tactic is where you have two or higher anchors in your opponent’s home board. (An anchor spot is a point occupied by at least 2 of your pieces.) It must be employed when you are significantly behind as it greatly improves your circumstances. The strongest places for anchors are near your competitor’s lower points and either on adjoining points or with one point in between. Timing is important for an effective backgame: besides, there is no point having two nice anchor spots and a solid wall in your own home board if you are then required to break down this straight away, while your competitor is moving their pieces home, because you don’t have other extra pieces to shift! In this situation, it’s better to have pieces on the bar so that you can preserve your position up until your opponent provides you an opportunity to hit, so it will be a great idea to try and get your opponent to hit them in this situation!
