In exceptionally general terms, there are 3 main plans used. You must be able to hop between techniques instantly as the course of the match unfolds.

The Blockade

This involves assembling a 6-thick wall of checkers, or at a minimum as deep as you can manage, to lock in your opponent’s checkers that are on your 1-point. This is deemed to be the most suitable course of action at the begining of the game. You can build the wall anywhere inbetween your 11-point and your two-point and then shuffle it into your home board as the game progresses.

The Blitz

This is composed of closing your home board as quick as as you can while keeping your opposer on the bar. i.e., if your challenger rolls an early two and moves one checker from your 1-point to your three-point and you then toss a five-five, you can play six/one six/one 8/3 eight/three. Your opposer is then in big-time calamity due to the fact that they have two pieces on the bar and you have closed half your inside board!

The Backgame

This course of action is where you have 2 or higher pieces in your opponent’s inner board. (An anchor is a position filled by at a minimum two of your checkers.) It should be used when you are decidedly behind as this plan much improves your opportunities. The strongest places for anchors are near your competitor’s lower points and also on abutting points or with one point in between. Timing is important for an effectual backgame: besides, there’s no reason having 2 nice anchors and a complete wall in your own inner board if you are then forced to break down this straight away, while your opposer is shifting their pieces home, taking into account that you do not have any other additional pieces to move! In this situation, it is better to have checkers on the bar so that you can maintain your position up till your opponent provides you an opportunity to hit, so it can be an excellent idea to try and get your challenger to hit them in this situation!
