In astonishingly general terms, there are three chief game plans employed. You need to be agile enough to switch strategies quickly as the action of the game unfolds.

The Blockade

This involves building a 6-thick wall of checkers, or at a minimum as deep as you can achieve, to block in your competitor’s pieces that are located on your 1-point. This is considered to be the most acceptable strategy at the begining of the game. You can build the wall anyplace within your eleven-point and your 2-point and then shift it into your home board as the match progresses.

The Blitz

This consists of closing your home board as fast as possible while keeping your competitor on the bar. e.g., if your challenger tosses an early two and moves one piece from your 1-point to your 3-point and you then roll a 5-5, you will be able to play 6/1 six/one 8/3 eight/three. Your opponent is then in serious calamity because they have 2 checkers on the bar and you have locked half your inside board!

The Backgame

This plan is where you have 2 or more anchors in your opponent’s home board. (An anchor spot is a position consisting of at least 2 of your checkers.) It should be used when you are decidedly behind as it greatly improves your circumstances. The better locations for anchors are close to your competitor’s smaller points and also on abutting points or with one point in between. Timing is critical for an effective backgame: besides, there is no reason having two nice anchor spots and a solid wall in your own home board if you are then forced to break apart this straight away, while your competitor is shifting their pieces home, seeing that you do not have any other extra checkers to move! In this case, it is more tolerable to have pieces on the bar so that you can maintain your position up till your opponent provides you an opportunity to hit, so it will be a wonderful idea to attempt and get your competitor to get them in this situation!
