In very simple terms, there are 3 main game plans employed. You want to be agile enough to hop between strategies quickly as the course of the game unfolds.

The Blockade

This is comprised of assembling a 6-deep wall of pieces, or at least as thick as you are able to achieve, to lock in the opponent’s checkers that are located on your 1-point. This is considered to be the most suitable strategy at the start of the game. You can build the wall anyplace between your eleven-point and your two-point and then shift it into your home board as the game advances.

The Blitz

This is composed of closing your home board as quick as as you can while keeping your opponent on the bar. e.g., if your opponent tosses an early two and moves one checker from your one-point to your three-point and you then toss a five-five, you can play 6/1 six/one eight/three eight/three. Your opponent is now in big-time dire straits due to the fact that they have 2 checkers on the bar and you have locked half your inner board!

The Backgame

This course of action is where you have two or higher anchors in your competitor’s home board. (An anchor spot is a point consisting of at least two of your checkers.) It should be played when you are decidedly behind as it greatly improves your chances. The better areas for anchors are close to your opponent’s smaller points and either on adjoining points or with one point separating them. Timing is crucial for a powerful backgame: besides, there’s no point having 2 nice anchors and a solid wall in your own inner board if you are then forced to dismantle this right away, while your challenger is shifting their checkers home, seeing that you do not have other extra checkers to shift! In this situation, it is more tolerable to have pieces on the bar so that you might preserve your position up till your opposer gives you an opportunity to hit, so it will be a wonderful idea to try and get your competitor to get them in this case!
