In exceptionally simple terms, there are three fundamental game plans employed. You want to be able to switch tactics instantly as the action of the game unfolds.

The Blockade

This involves building a 6-thick wall of pieces, or at least as deep as you can achieve, to lock in your competitor’s checkers that are on your 1-point. This is considered to be the most suitable course of action at the start of the game. You can create the wall anywhere within your eleven-point and your 2-point and then shift it into your home board as the game advances.

The Blitz

This involves locking your home board as quick as possible while keeping your challenger on the bar. i.e., if your competitor tosses an early two and moves one piece from your one-point to your 3-point and you then roll a five-five, you will be able to play six/one six/one 8/3 8/3. Your opponent is then in big-time calamity because they have 2 checkers on the bar and you have closed half your home board!

The Backgame

This plan is where you have two or more pieces in your competitor’s home board. (An anchor spot is a position consisting of at a minimum two of your checkers.) It must be used when you are extremely behind as this strategy much improves your chances. The best places for anchors are close to your opponent’s lower points and either on adjoining points or with one point separating them. Timing is crucial for a powerful backgame: after all, there is no point having 2 nice anchor spots and a complete wall in your own home board if you are then forced to break apart this straight away, while your competitor is moving their checkers home, because you don’t have any other additional pieces to shift! In this situation, it is more favorable to have pieces on the bar so that you might maintain your position until your competitor provides you an opportunity to hit, so it will be an excellent idea to attempt and get your opposer to hit them in this case!
