In very simple terms, there are three main strategies employed. You must be agile enough to switch techniques almost instantly as the course of the match unfolds.

The Blockade

This is composed of creating a 6-deep wall of checkers, or at a minimum as thick as you might achieve, to lock in your opponent’s checkers that are located on your 1-point. This is considered to be the most suitable procedure at the begining of the game. You can create the wall anywhere between your eleven-point and your 2-point and then shuffle it into your home board as the match continues.

The Blitz

This is composed of locking your home board as fast as possible while keeping your challenger on the bar. e.g., if your challenger tosses an early two and shifts one checker from your 1-point to your 3-point and you then toss a five-five, you will be able to play six/one 6/1 8/3 8/3. Your opponent is now in serious calamity considering that they have two checkers on the bar and you have closed half your inner board!

The Backgame

This plan is where you have two or higher anchors in your opponent’s inner board. (An anchor spot is a position occupied by at least 2 of your pieces.) It should be played when you are significantly behind as this plan much improves your opportunities. The better places for anchor spots are near your competitor’s smaller points and either on adjoining points or with one point separating them. Timing is critical for an effective backgame: after all, there is no reason having 2 nice anchor spots and a solid wall in your own inner board if you are then forced to break up this straight away, while your opposer is shifting their pieces home, because you don’t have any other additional pieces to move! In this situation, it’s better to have pieces on the bar so that you can maintain your position up until your challenger provides you an opportunity to hit, so it may be a good idea to attempt and get your opposer to get them in this case!
