In very simple terms, there are 3 chief strategies used. You want to be able to hop between game plans quickly as the course of the game unfolds.

The Blockade

This consists of creating a 6-deep wall of checkers, or at least as deep as you might manage, to barricade in your competitor’s checkers that are located on your 1-point. This is judged to be the most adequate procedure at the begining of the match. You can build the wall anyplace within your eleven-point and your 2-point and then move it into your home board as the match progresses.

The Blitz

This involves locking your home board as fast as possible while keeping your opponent on the bar. e.g., if your opponent rolls an early 2 and shifts one piece from your one-point to your three-point and you then toss a five-five, you will be able to play six/one 6/1 8/3 eight/three. Your opponent is then in big-time difficulty seeing that they have 2 checkers on the bar and you have closed half your inner board!

The Backgame

This strategy is where you have 2 or more pieces in your opponent’s home board. (An anchor spot is a point occupied by at a minimum two of your pieces.) It would be used when you are extremely behind as this plan much improves your chances. The best places for anchor spots are close to your opponent’s lower points and also on adjacent points or with one point in between. Timing is crucial for an effectual backgame: besides, there is no reason having two nice anchor spots and a solid wall in your own home board if you are then required to dismantle this straight away, while your opposer is shifting their checkers home, considering that you don’t have other additional checkers to move! In this situation, it is more tolerable to have pieces on the bar so that you can maintain your position up till your challenger provides you an opportunity to hit, so it may be a great idea to attempt and get your opposer to get them in this case!
