In very general terms, there are 3 chief tactics used. You need to be agile enough to hop between strategies instantly as the course of the game unfolds.

The Blockade

This is composed of creating a 6-thick wall of pieces, or at least as thick as you might manage, to barricade in the competitor’s checkers that are located on your 1-point. This is deemed to be the most suitable strategy at the begining of the match. You can build the wall anyplace inbetween your eleven-point and your two-point and then move it into your home board as the game advances.

The Blitz

This consists of closing your home board as fast as as you can while keeping your opponent on the bar. i.e., if your opponent tosses an early 2 and shifts one checker from your one-point to your three-point and you then roll a five-five, you can play 6/1 six/one eight/three eight/three. Your opponent is now in serious dire straits seeing that they have two pieces on the bar and you have locked half your inside board!

The Backgame

This course of action is where you have two or more anchors in your competitor’s home board. (An anchor is a position occupied by at a minimum 2 of your pieces.) It should be used when you are significantly behind as it greatly improves your opportunities. The better places for anchors are towards your opponent’s lower points and either on abutting points or with one point separating them. Timing is integral for a powerful backgame: besides, there is no point having two nice anchors and a solid wall in your own inner board if you are then forced to break apart this right away, while your opponent is getting their checkers home, seeing that you do not have other additional checkers to shift! In this case, it’s better to have checkers on the bar so that you might maintain your position up until your opponent provides you a chance to hit, so it can be a wonderful idea to try and get your opposer to hit them in this situation!
