In very general terms, there are three main techniques employed. You want to be able to switch strategies instantly as the action of the match unfolds.
The Blockade
This involves creating a 6-deep wall of checkers, or at a minimum as deep as you are able to achieve, to block in the competitor’s pieces that are on your 1-point. This is judged to be the most adequate tactic at the begining of the match. You can assemble the wall anywhere inbetween your eleven-point and your 2-point and then shuffle it into your home board as the match progresses.
The Blitz
This is comprised of closing your home board as quick as as you can while keeping your opposer on the bar. e.g., if your opponent tosses an early 2 and moves one piece from your one-point to your three-point and you then toss a five-five, you will be able to play 6/1 six/one eight/three eight/three. Your competitor is then in big-time dire straits seeing that they have 2 checkers on the bar and you have locked half your inner board!
The Backgame
This plan is where you have two or higher pieces in your opponent’s home board. (An anchor spot is a position filled by at a minimum 2 of your pieces.) It should be used when you are extremely behind as this action greatly improves your opportunities. The best locations for anchors are close to your competitor’s lower points and either on adjacent points or with a single point in between. Timing is crucial for an effective backgame: after all, there’s no point having two nice anchors and a complete wall in your own inner board if you are then forced to break up this right away, while your opponent is getting their pieces home, because you do not have other spare checkers to move! In this situation, it’s better to have pieces on the bar so that you can maintain your position up until your opposer gives you an opportunity to hit, so it will be a good idea to attempt and get your competitor to get them in this case!
