In astonishingly general terms, there are three basic strategies used. You must be able to switch techniques almost instantly as the action of the match unfolds.
The Blockade
This is composed of assembling a 6-deep wall of checkers, or at a minimum as deep as you are able to manage, to block in the competitor’s pieces that are on your 1-point. This is judged to be the most acceptable course of action at the start of the match. You can assemble the wall anyplace inbetween your 11-point and your 2-point and then shuffle it into your home board as the game progresses.
The Blitz
This is comprised of closing your home board as quick as possible while keeping your opponent on the bar. i.e., if your opponent rolls an early 2 and shifts one piece from your 1-point to your three-point and you then roll a 5-5, you will be able to play 6/1 six/one 8/3 8/3. Your opponent is then in big-time trouble due to the fact that they have 2 checkers on the bar and you have closed half your inner board!
The Backgame
This strategy is where you have 2 or more anchors in your competitor’s home board. (An anchor spot is a position consisting of at least two of your checkers.) It should be employed when you are extremely behind as it much improves your circumstances. The best areas for anchors are towards your opponent’s smaller points and also on adjoining points or with one point in between. Timing is critical for an effective backgame: after all, there is no point having two nice anchor spots and a complete wall in your own home board if you are then required to break up this right away, while your competitor is moving their checkers home, owing to the fact that you do not have any other additional pieces to shift! In this case, it’s more favorable to have pieces on the bar so that you can preserve your position until your challenger provides you an opportunity to hit, so it will be a great idea to try and get your challenger to get them in this case!
