In astonishingly simple terms, there are 3 chief tactics used. You must be agile enough to hop between techniques almost instantly as the action of the game unfolds.

The Blockade

This is composed of creating a 6-deep wall of pieces, or at a minimum as thick as you can manage, to block in your competitor’s checkers that are located on your 1-point. This is considered to be the most suitable course of action at the start of the game. You can create the wall anywhere inbetween your 11-point and your two-point and then shift it into your home board as the game continues.

The Blitz

This involves closing your home board as quick as possible while keeping your opposer on the bar. e.g., if your challenger rolls an early two and moves one checker from your 1-point to your three-point and you then toss a five-five, you will be able to play 6/1 six/one 8/3 8/3. Your challenger is now in serious trouble since they have two checkers on the bar and you have closed half your home board!

The Backgame

This plan is where you have two or higher anchors in your opponent’s home board. (An anchor spot is a position consisting of at a minimum two of your checkers.) It would be played when you are extremely behind as it greatly improves your chances. The strongest places for anchors are towards your competitor’s smaller points and also on adjacent points or with one point separating them. Timing is essential for an effectual backgame: after all, there’s no reason having 2 nice anchor spots and a solid wall in your own home board if you are then forced to break up this right away, while your opposer is moving their checkers home, because you don’t have other extra pieces to shift! In this case, it’s more tolerable to have checkers on the bar so that you can maintain your position up until your competitor provides you a chance to hit, so it can be a good idea to attempt and get your competitor to hit them in this situation!
