In astonishingly general terms, there are three basic game plans employed. You need to be agile enough to switch tactics almost instantly as the course of the game unfolds.

The Blockade

This is comprised of building a 6-thick wall of checkers, or at a minimum as deep as you can achieve, to block in the competitor’s checkers that are on your 1-point. This is deemed to be the most acceptable strategy at the start of the game. You can create the wall anywhere within your eleven-point and your two-point and then shuffle it into your home board as the match progresses.

The Blitz

This consists of closing your home board as fast as possible while keeping your challenger on the bar. e.g., if your opposer tosses an early two and shifts one piece from your 1-point to your three-point and you then roll a five-five, you can play 6/1 6/1 8/3 eight/three. Your competitor is now in serious trouble since they have 2 checkers on the bar and you have locked half your inner board!

The Backgame

This strategy is where you have two or more anchors in your opponent’s home board. (An anchor is a position consisting of at least two of your checkers.) It must be used when you are extremely behind as it much improves your opportunities. The better locations for anchor spots are towards your competitor’s smaller points and either on adjacent points or with one point in between. Timing is crucial for a competent backgame: at the end of the day, there is no reason having two nice anchors and a complete wall in your own inner board if you are then forced to break down this straight away, while your challenger is getting their checkers home, owing to the fact that you do not have any other additional pieces to move! In this situation, it’s better to have pieces on the bar so that you can maintain your position up until your opposer provides you a chance to hit, so it can be a great idea to attempt and get your opponent to hit them in this case!
