In very general terms, there are 3 general plans employed. You need to be agile enough to hop between strategies instantly as the course of the game unfolds.

The Blockade

This is comprised of creating a 6-thick wall of checkers, or at least as deep as you can manage, to lock in your competitor’s pieces that are on your 1-point. This is deemed to be the most suitable course of action at the start of the game. You can create the wall anywhere inbetween your eleven-point and your 2-point and then move it into your home board as the match advances.

The Blitz

This is comprised of locking your home board as quickly as possible while keeping your competitor on the bar. i.e., if your opposer rolls an early 2 and moves one piece from your 1-point to your 3-point and you then roll a five-five, you are able to play six/one six/one eight/three 8/3. Your competitor is now in big-time dire straits due to the fact that they have 2 pieces on the bar and you have locked half your inner board!

The Backgame

This plan is where you have 2 or more anchors in your opponent’s home board. (An anchor spot is a position consisting of at a minimum two of your checkers.) It must be employed when you are significantly behind as this strategy much improves your opportunities. The better places for anchor spots are near your competitor’s lower points and also on adjoining points or with one point separating them. Timing is integral for an effectual backgame: besides, there is no point having 2 nice anchor spots and a solid wall in your own inner board if you are then forced to break up this right away, while your opposer is moving their checkers home, because you do not have any other spare pieces to shift! In this situation, it’s more tolerable to have checkers on the bar so that you are able to preserve your position until your opponent gives you an opportunity to hit, so it can be a good idea to attempt and get your opposer to hit them in this situation!
