In astonishingly simple terms, there are 3 fundamental techniques employed. You need to be able to hop between techniques quickly as the course of the match unfolds.

The Blockade

This consists of assembling a 6-thick wall of pieces, or at a minimum as deep as you might achieve, to lock in your opponent’s checkers that are on your 1-point. This is deemed to be the most suitable procedure at the start of the match. You can build the wall anyplace within your eleven-point and your two-point and then shuffle it into your home board as the match continues.

The Blitz

This is comprised of closing your home board as fast as possible while keeping your challenger on the bar. e.g., if your opponent tosses an early two and moves one checker from your 1-point to your three-point and you then toss a five-five, you will be able to play 6/1 six/one 8/3 eight/three. Your opponent is then in serious calamity seeing that they have two pieces on the bar and you have closed half your home board!

The Backgame

This plan is where you have two or higher checkers in your opponent’s inner board. (An anchor is a position consisting of at least two of your pieces.) It must be played when you are decidedly behind as it greatly improves your opportunities. The best places for anchor spots are close to your competitor’s lower points and also on adjacent points or with one point in between. Timing is essential for an effectual backgame: besides, there is no point having 2 nice anchor spots and a solid wall in your own inner board if you are then forced to break apart this straight away, while your competitor is getting their pieces home, considering that you don’t have any other extra checkers to move! In this situation, it’s better to have checkers on the bar so that you are able to maintain your position up till your opposer provides you a chance to hit, so it may be a wonderful idea to try and get your opposer to get them in this situation!
